Antique maps (and antique prints in general) are mostly from hand made, illustrated books and atlases that were broken apart long ago for their hand-painted prints or "plates". A small percentage of antique maps and prints were published separately as folding maps or as decorative prints. In both cases the historical prints were most probably created by an early printing process, with any addition of color being done by hand. A market for antique prints has existed for hundreds of years and we are fortunate that many have survived in good condition. There is no set formula for the valuation of antique maps, as value depends on a number of factors, such as age, size, rarity, geographical region, condition, cartographer, and decorative appeal. Like rare books or old master prints, antique maps will almost certainly have been offered for sale more than once over the course of the years, giving the prospective buyer a means of gauging market value. Additionally, recent sales and current offerings provide guidance to dealers and collectors looking to estimate market value. |
