Historic Villages
The Kingston Stockade District is an eight-block area in the western section of Kingston, New York. It is the site of the mid-17th century Dutch settlement of Wiltwyck, which was renamed Kingston when it passed to English control. Within the Kingston Stockade District are many buildings from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, including the original Ulster County courthouse and the Senate House, which is where the state of New York was established in 1777. The Cold Spring Historic District includes much of the central area of the Hudson River village of Cold Spring in Putnam County, New York, giving the town its quaint character. Most of the houses and other buildings were built in the years preceding the Civil War, when the nearby West Point Foundry was at the peak of its production. The West Point Foundry was an ironworks that operated from 1817 to 1911, and became famous for its production of Parrott rifles and other munitions during the Civil War. Batsto Village is an historic site located in the South Central New Jersey Pine Barrens, and is nationally recognized for its historical significance and beauty. Two centuries of American history are available to visitors, with the Pine Barrens creating a natural scenic backdrop. The Batsto Iron Works were built along the Batsto River in 1766, as Batsto had the natural resources necessary for making iron. Bog ore was “mined” from the banks of nearby streams and rivers, wood from the forests became charcoal for fuel, and the river furnished power for manufacturing. The former company town called Double Trouble contained a cranberry farm and packing plant, and is now a window into past and current industries in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. The Double Trouble Company was formed to sell timber, millwork products and cranberries, and a succession of sawmills have been situated here since the mid-1700s. The village consists of cranberry bogs and original historic structures dating from the late 19th century through the early 20th century, including a general store, a schoolhouse and cottages. Erie Canal Village is a reconstructed 19th century settlement. located on the site where the first shovelful of earth was turned for the construction of the original Erie Canal in 1817. A horse drawn Packet Boat plies a section of the enlarged Erie Canal, giving visitors a taste of early 19th century water transportation.
